TIME has finally run out for Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer as one of TV's classic sitcoms says farewell. Romantic comedy As Time Goes By reaches its 64th and last episode this Sunday, August 4, leaving millions of fans wanting more.
Screened on BBC1 at 8.20pm as a prelude to the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony, a happy ending is expected at both events.
The relationship of former wartime sweethearts Jean Pargeter and Lionel Hardcastle has delighted viewers in both Britain and America for the last decade.
``It's sad, but I think that probably it's time,' explains Judi. ``I only go by the fact that the last episode we did, somebody said to me: `Wasn't the dog good and where did you get your luggage from?' I thought: `Oh well, it's time we packed this up now!' But it will be sad not to be working together.'

We are family
Geoffrey shares the sadness of his co-star. ``I've been asked if we'll see each other again and I'm sure we will.' But he's more realistic about keeping in touch with others who have become almost like family during the years they've made the series together.
``You kind of know that will never happen. In this business, you can work with people and then never work with them again, so there's a great chance that we won't work with a lot of the crew again, whom we've been very close to for 10 years and they're lovely people. That, I think, is the over-riding sadness, apart from the fact that something that has been very enjoyable is coming to an end.'
Produced and directed by sitcom legend Sydney Lotterby, there are several fan club websites on the other side of the Atlantic dedicated to the ``Britcom'. Recently, 65 fans aged from 16 to 87 jetted in from the USA and Canada for one of the recordings. ``It's surprised everyone that it has grown and grown in its appeal in the States,' admits Geoffrey. ``I imagine it's the essential Englishness of it.'
Adds Judi: ``And I think it's quite quaint to them. The two main characters in it aren't young and maybe that's got something to do with it too. You don't often get a series about people who are after 50, shall we say?'
Veteran actor Geoffrey said both he and Sydney had initial doubts about a series which was based at the outset on a missing letter separating two loves for almost four decades. Bob Larbey, who had written the comedy, A Fine Romance, starring Judi and her late husband, Michael Williams, cut through their fears.

`There was a big gestation period,' recalls Geoffrey, ``and then Bob made wonderful suggestions. In an early planning meeting we couldn't get over the idea that the basis of the thing was that, 38 years before, I'd gone off to Korea and sent a letter and it didn't get there. Syd and I both said: `Come on, you've got to explain this - you can't base something on that dodgy premise.' And Bob said: `No, you don't explain it at all - the letter simply went astray'.'

A final treat
Dame Judi, who can also be seen in a repeat of The Last Of The Blonde Bombshells on BBC1 at 9pm on Saturday, August 3, says: ``I'm often asked if Jean's like me - no, she's not at all like me.'
With Jean's daughter Judith now married to Alistair, viewers will find out this weekend if Harry can finally pluck up the courage and ask Sandy to join him in Canada. And what of Jean and Lionel?
WELL, Judi and Geoffrey have one final treat up their sleeves to ease the sadness at this weekend's departure. They'll be turning back time in a special programme called You Must Remember This.. as the two characters recall their decade together.
``I remember that we've laughed a huge amount,' concludes Judy, who can be seen again this November as M in the new James Bond film, Die Another Day. ``All the filming has been huge fun and we've had such a good time.'
